“I found out that what started as a mean of protection against pollution and smog when riding a bike through the city has now become a powerful accessory for women in public. Since Pune doesn’t have a well established public transport system, women (and men) are dependent on the motorbikes, which adds to the pollution of the city. Many girls told me that the scarf would protect their hair and skin from the pollution. But I was never sure why the men wouldn’t wear something similar, if this was the main reason. You would sometimes but rarely see men wearing a tissue in front of their mouth.”
