“Over the years I spent time with various groups of young people, those that are generally stereotyped by the media as being ‘delinquent’. I found such individuals to be amongst the smartest that I met. Having been on the raw end of the media ire because they would not quietly accept the hand dealt them by society, they totally understood all of the problems of documentation and representation. They were the only people that understood the nuances of representation. It is societies failure that we denigrate people because they do not confirm to social norms, or don’t do well at school. Until we deviate from this binary I don’t know how, as a society, we are ever going to really find a coherent sense of self.”
